چکیده

We consider the situation in two sample testing when one variance is assumed to be known while the other variance is considered unknown. This situation arises, for example, when one is interested in comparing a standard treatment with a new treatment. Although this situation occurs relatively infrequently, our example discusses the important tool of moment matching and makes the classic two sample Satterthwaite t-approximation transparent.

Comparison between Frequentist Test and Bayesian Test to Variance Normal in the Presence of Nuisance Parameter: One-sided and Two-sided Hypothesis

This article is concerned with the comparison P-value and Bayesian measure for the variance of Normal distribution with mean as nuisance paramete. Firstly, the P-value of null hypothesis is compared with the posterior probability when we used a fixed prior distribution and the sample size increases. In second stage the P-value is compared with the lower bound of posterior probability when the ...

A Note on Confidence Interval for the Power of the One Sample t Test

In introductory statistics texts, the power of the test of a one-sample mean when the variance is known is widely discussed. However, when the variance is unknown, the power of the Student’s t-test is seldommentioned. In this note, a general methodology for obtaining inference concerning a scalar parameter of interest of any exponential family model is proposed. The method is then applied to th...

P-VAlUES MAXIMIZED OVER A CONFIDENCE SET FOR THE NUISANCE PARAMETER

For testing problems of the form Ho : v = Vo with unknown nuisance parameter (). a variety of methods are used to deal with (). The simplest approach is exemplified by the t test where the unknown variance is replaced by the sample variance. and the t distribution accounts for estimation of the variance. In other problems such as the two by two contingency table. one conditions on a sufficient ...

On the Admissibility or Inadmissibility of Fixed Sample Size Tests in a Sequential Setting

Questions pertaining to the admissibility of fixed sample size tests of hypotheses, when sequential tests are available, are considered. For the normal case with unknown mean, suppose the risk function is a linear combination of probability of error and expected sample size. Then any fixed sample size test, with sample size n⩾ 2, is inadmissible. On the other hand, suppose the risk function con...

Approximate Con dence Intervals for One Proportion and Di erence of Two Proportions

SUMMARY Constructing a conndence interval for a binomial proportion or the diierence of two proportions is a routine exercise in daily data analysis. The best-known method is the Wald interval based on the asymptotic normal approximation to the distribution of the observed sample proportion, though it is known to have a bad performance for small to medium sample sizes. Recently Agresti and his ...
